Top 10 Fire and Smoke Damage Tips for Your Home
12/3/2021 (Permalink)
What Now? SERVPRO of Venice is here to help!
If your home has suffered from fire and/or smoke damage, your safety and the safety of everyone in your household should be the primary focus. Sometimes a fire marshal or other government official may need to give the 'all clear' before allowing anyone back into the building. If you are unsure, check with your local fire department.
Once you are back in the building, keep these tips in mind:
- Some of the most prevalent concerns to be on the lookout for are electrical and "slip and fall" hazards.
- If you are not sure about the safety of an activity that needs to be completed, do not attempt.
- Be careful handling wet materials, as they can be VERY heavy.
- To reduce the chance for smoke and soot becoming embedded into furniture, carpets, or upholstery, keep the movement limited in your home.
- Keep hands, tools, and cleaning cloths clean and fresh so as to not increase the amount of soiling.
- Change your HVAC filter. If smoke was heavy, consider having a licensed HVAC company inspect your duct work and air handler and other equipment that may have been damaged or affected.
- Remember the bottom side when cleaning house plants and other household items.
- Use a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil to clean and protect your household chrome.
- Document all losses and review insurance information.
- Secure your property.

Tips to Protect Your Commercial Property From Mold Damage
11/19/2021 (Permalink)
Large or Small Business and Commercial Mold Remediation
Mold! That four letter word that seems to be everywhere! When most folks think of mold, they think of issues within residential homes and condominiums. However, mold can affect your business office, warehouse, and commercial building too. While most business often have more rigorous in-house inspections and year round maintenance or facility managers, mold can still appear at your business location, especially after a storm, water or fire damage, or other catastrophic event. It can often go unnoticed in areas that are not frequently used, from storage rooms or that office area no one has used for a while, or under cabinets, crawl spaces, and other seldom used areas.
If you notice mold or your employees or clients have mentioned a 'musty smell', you should take the following steps to mitigate the mold as soon as possible, because it will not go away on its own!
- Find the source! Mold needs four things to survive and grow/spread: Food (any organic material, including dust!), Moisture/Humidity, Oxygen, and an ideal temperature range around 75-88 degrees, however some mold have optimal growth at lower temperatures, even as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit according to some studies.
- Fix the source! If you have an active water intrusion or leak, get it repaired and dried out as soon as possible. The longer the water damage continues, the larger your challenge for cleanup will be. If your HVAC system is not running optimally, get it tested and repaired as soon as possible. Most buildings today are built very airtight, with little natural airflow to help regulate air fluctuations, so having an efficient and well running HVAC system is very important in the Venice Florida area.
- However, if you do have mold in a certain area, you want to close off the HVAC returns and vents in that area to prevent the spread of spores to other areas of your business, and do NOT blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
- Do not attempt to clean with bleach or other disinfectants as these often do not fully remove the mold roots and when sprayed directly on the mold, can create spores that spread by going airborne.
- If you suspect you have mold, give SERVPRO of Venice a call. We will do a no-cost walk-through of your property and help you with the next steps, which often involve having a state licensed Industrial Hygienist (IH) or Mold Assessor to provide testing and developing a protocol for mitigation.
Please remember this: There is no such thing as 'mold removal'. Mold naturally found everywhere, but mold mitigation is what we do. If you have a mold problem, give us a call to help make it "Like it never even happened."
Blackout! How to be prepared "After the Storm"
11/10/2021 (Permalink)
When the storms roll in, "Be Prepared, not Scared!
Are you prepared in case there is a blackout (loss of power) after a storm? Follow are a few tips for how to prepare in the event of a power outage.
TLDR: Watch the following video from FEMA for the 10 tips:
https://youtu.be/4eH7VbMXir4
The American Red Cross suggests the following:
Coping with Power OutagesSudden power outages can be frustrating and troublesome, especially when they last a long time. If a power outage is 2 hours or less, don’t be concerned about losing your perishable foods. For prolonged power outages, though, there are steps you can take to minimize food loss and to keep all members of your household as comfortable as possible. Energy Conservation Recommendations- Turn off lights and computers when not in use.
- Wash clothes in cold water if possible; wash only full loads and clean the dryer's lint trap after each use.
- When using a dishwasher, wash full loads and use the light cycle. If possible, use the rinse only cycle and turn off the high temperature rinse option. When the regular wash cycle is done, just open the dishwasher door to allow the dishes to air dry.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights
While blackouts are not fun, if you are prepared, they can be a lot less stressful for the family. If you have pets, children, anyone with disabilities, senior citizens, or anyone else who may have special needs staying in your home, make sure you have supplies, medicine, and comfort items that will help them cope through the blackout time also.

Why SERVPRO of Venice for your Sewage and Toilet Overflow Cleanup and Restoration
8/31/2021 (Permalink)
Do not wait to call for help when your home or office experiences a sewage backup or toilet overflow!
When a sewage backup or toilet overflow happens in your home or office, trying to cleanup without the right tools and expertise can be dangerous. Sewage cleanup is considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO of Venice has the specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.
When choosing a biohazard cleanup company, consider their experience and training. As a cleanup and restoration company, SERPVO of Venice has the ability to handle a wide range of pathogens and will ensure the cleanup process will go smoothly regardless of any unexpected developments.
Sewage backups pose significant property damage and health risks. SERVPRO is an Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified firm with Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians. Their biohazard cleanup crew can remove the sewage, clean all surfaces, and eliminate odors along with harmful microorganisms.
WHAT TO DO IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING A SEWAGE BACKUP
Following are several steps that should be taken in order to help prevent the sewage backup from spreading.
- Be sure to remove any children, pets, and seniors from the home. Do not allow them back into the area until the damage is completely fixed and safe.
- Keep yourself safe by putting on any protective clothing such as rubber boots, rubber gloves, eye protection, a face mask, and more.
- If the distribution panel is above water, switch off the electricity by using a dry wooden stick and rubber gloves.
- Turn off the water in your home, and do not use any water for bathing, drinking, washing hands or dishes, and others. This water may be contaminated.
- You may need to contact your utility companies and have them shut off the supply to your home if you cannot safely turn them off yourself.
- Open your home’s doors and windows to allow proper air ventilation. You won’t want to use your home’s AC as this will spread contaminated air throughout your home.
- Remove any items from the area that are dry and not contaminated.
- You can add small amounts of chlorine bleach into the standing water to slightly disinfect.
- Contact your insurance company and notify them of the backup. You’ll want to take pictures of any damage that the sewage backup caused. This will come in handy as proof when filing your claim.
- Never attempt to unclog the drains. You will need to clean up the sewage spill before taking any further action.

Qualities to Look for in Commercial Restoration Companies:

Preferably, the business should have an IICRC (or the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification), which ensures top-level standards and ethics surrounding restoration processes.

5 Fire Prevention Tips For Venice Florida Homeowners
5/17/2021 (Permalink)
After the fire department leaves, call SERVPRO of Venice to help restore your home or business.
A fire can be one of the most traumatic events in one's life. But the trauma and damage can be lessened if your home and everyone living there is aware of the basic steps of fire preparation. By being prepared in case of a fire, you provide insurance to help keep yourself and your family safe. Here are five tips to help survive a fire.
- Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. It is great that your home has smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. But you need to test them regularly (at least every 3 months) to ensure that they are working how they are intended too.
- Leave them sprinklers systems alone! Many newer multifamily home buildings (condos and townhomes) come with sprinkler systems built into the ceilings and walkways. NEVER hang anything from a sprinkler or block it's path or tamper with them. You could create a water damage and/or reduce the effectiveness of the sprinkler system.
- Purchase a fire extinguisher: A multi-class fire extinguisher can help prevent a small fire from becoming a whole home disaster. Strategically place them in areas where a fire may happen (kitchen, outdoor bbq area, laundry, garage, utility room, workshop, etc.) and near exit points. A fire extinguisher should only be used when a fire is confined to a small space. Do not try to fight a large fire with an extinguisher.
- Stay alert while cooking. Kitchen fires are often the cause of a residential fire. A grease fire is one of the most common types of kitchen fires. Please remember do NOT use any kind of liquid to extinguish a grease fire. Pouring a liquid of will just spread the grease and potentially cause more damage or injury. if possible and safe to do so, turn off the heat, cover the fire with a baking sheet or large pan to remove the oxygen supply. A class B, BC, or ABC fire extinguisher can be used as a last resort as it will contaminate your kitchen, but better than a full fire. If you are unsure and do not feel you have the ability to handle the fire, evacuate yourself and anyone else in the home and call 911.
- Have an evacuation and ready plan. Prepare a plan and practice your plan with all home residents. Have a clear plan to know how to evacuate your home in case of a fire or other disaster and also a safe spot where to meet at afterwards.
Despite how prepared we are there are potential events that result in fires that are uncontrollable and that cause widespread damage to a property. That is where SERVPRO of Venice steps in to help. Fire clean up should be left up to a professional restoration company that can aid in minimizing the fire damage as much as possible.
If you need any help with residential or commercial fire damage and clean up, please call us 24/7 365 days a year: SERVPRO of Venice, 941-484-7777

Common Homeowner Water Damage Mistakes to Avoid
2/25/2021 (Permalink)
If your home suffers from water damage, don't delay, call today!
Common Homeowner Water Damage Mistakes to Avoid!
When you home suffers from a water damage event, the process of minimizing damage and restoring a property to its original condition can be stressful time. Unfortunately many homeowners are not fully aware of the proper process for cleanup and restoration and make common mistakes while trying to help. These mistakes can make restoring a home even more challenging.
Following are some helpful tips that can help homeowners avoid common mistakes, which will reduce the cost, time, and stress for making a water damage event "Like it never even happened."
Mistake #1: Trying to self-clean and restore their home after a water damage event.
We have all been there; we want to save time and money so we try to take on a project in our home. Water damage to your home should not be treated as a normal project. If you the amount of water is covering multiple rooms or has shown damage to cabinets or other structural components, you do not want to just try and mop it all up and put a fan or two on it. The problem is most homeowners do not have the right experience and equipment to properly handle a water damage. Water easily seeps into areas that you may not know to look or have the ability to check. Properly drying out building materials is a difficult task and one best left to a professional.
Mistake #2: Not Calling a Professional Soon Enough.
One of our taglines at SERVPRO is 'Faster to any size disaster.' This isn't just a fancy and good sounding branding effort, it is because arriving and acting fast is a critical aspect of effective water damage restoration. Water tends to spread fast, traveling behind walls, cabinets, appliances, and underneath flooring. Once that happens, mold can grow and further damage walls, furniture, and other materials. Mold can begin to grow less than 24-48 hours after water exposure depending on other circumstances in the home (humidity level, pre-existing water damage, temperature, etc.).
To quickly find the source of the water damage and shut it off, and then to immediately begin the water extraction and drying process is crucial for your home's restoration. Calling a professional water damage cleanup and restoration company is the best way to do that.
Mistake #3: Not Taking Safety Precautions.
Being in a home that recently suffered from a recent water damage evet can be dangerous, especially if the water damage came from flood waters, sewage back up or other 'category 3' type sources. Along with potential biohazard contaminations, potential slips and falls from wet flooring and stairways can also create a dangerous situation. Care must be taking when operating any electronic device or appliance because turning on electronics or touching electronic devices can result in electric shocks or further damage to the property.
Saturated building materials can fail, and debris can lead to slips and falls. The best thing a homeowner can do after eliminating the source of the water (if possible) and calling a water restoration company is to leave the building and stay out.
Mistake #4: Not Realizing the True Amount of Damage to Your Home.
The amount of damage caused by a water damage event isn’t always immediately visible. If you take the "Do It Yourself" approach and only clean up the visible water, you will most likely discover mold or unpleasant odors lingering in furniture, floors, and walls in the near future.
To properly evaluate the true amount of damage from a water event, you must follow through with industrial standards for cleanup and deodorization. This may include antimicrobial treatments or sanitization processes and is something a professional restoration company is best suited to handle.
A proper evaluation of the damage is also vital for insurance reasons. Some insurance providers will deny claims where homeowners attempt repairs themselves or delay calling a professional to document the damage. The best way to ensure a policy covers the full cost of a restoration is to work with a reputable restoration company and contact them immediately.
SERVPRO of Venice works with all local, state, and national insurance companies, and is a preferred vendor for many of them. If your home suffers from a water damage event, call us 24/7 365 days a year at 941-484-7777. We are here to help.
How to Tell the Difference Between Mildew and Mold
12/8/2020 (Permalink)
If you suspect mold growth in your home or business, give us a call for fast and professional remediation!
While any fungal growth in your home or business is unpleasant, knowing the difference between mildew and mold is important before starting a remediation project to remove the fungi and prevent further damage.
Differences between Mildew and Mold
Telling the difference between mildew and mold can be difficult, but there are some clues that can help you determine the type of fungus in your property. Mildew commonly has the following characteristics:
- Powdery or fluffy appearance
- Gray or white color that darkens with time
- Relatively easy to remove
Mold, on the other hand, is often described by the following adjectives:
- Slimy or fuzzy
- Black, green or other color depending on the type
- Invasive and harder to remove
In some instances, a homeowner or maintenance staff may be unable to determine the type of fungus present. In such cases, a professional hygienist or air quality inspector can determine the best course of action to take.
Similarities
So while there are many differences between the two fungi, they do share a key similarity: Both mildew and mold need moisture to thrive. This means that mildew and mold can both be prevented by keeping your home dry, with an indoor humidity below 50%. If necessary, run a dehumidifier to keep within those levels. Air conditioning can also help dry out your home. Mildew and mold easily grow in higher moisture areas of a home or business, such as in a crawlspace, bathroom, wash room, etc. Look for signs of fungal growth in these areas when doing routine cleaning or inspections. Both mildew growth and mold damage are easier to mitigate if caught early.
Other Considerations
Generally speaking, mildew is easier to clean than mold growth. There are a variety of cleaners available that can kill mildew. As long as you work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask and gloves, you should be able to safely clean mildew growth yourself. However, mold growth often needs to be professionally cleaned, especially if the infestation is large.
If you need help with either mildew or mold damage in your Venice Florida home, a certified restoration company such as SERVPRO of Venice can help. We have the equipment and experience to address the issue safely and get your home back to normal. Call 941-484-7777 for fast response to your mold problem.

Now is the time to take action, and do it fast to avoid further damage to your home. Following these next steps will help you prevent more damage and allow for quicker restoration of your home.
The number one thing to keep in mind is YOUR SAFETY! If you do not feel comfortable or safe doing any of these steps, call for help immediately.
How to Deal With a Flooded Kitchen
If the flooding is small, and you are able to stop the source of the water damage, then you may be able to clean it up quickly and on your own. From our experience, this is not the case in most water damage events. If you are not sure of what to do, call your local SERVPRO Cleanup and Restoration company to assist. Following are tips to help minimize the damage and the amount of restoration needed to get your home back to normal.
- Turn off the water: If you can see that the water leak can be stopped by closing the supply line valves (normally located under the sink), or if not sure turn the main water line off. Pro-TIP: Notate where your main water line shutoff is located before you have an accident! Tag it if possible and let any other family members know where it is. In most cases the main water shutoff is located in the garage before the hot water heater, or on the side of the road. If you cannot find it, call your water supply company.
- Turn off the power: For any room that is affected with water damage, you want to turn off the water until you know it is safe. After you have turned off the power, and you can safely do so, unplug any appliances, TV’s, or anything else electrically powered.
- Turn off gas/propane: Flooding can potentially damage gas supply lines, regulators, and burners. If damage is noticed, have your appliances inspected to ensure they are still safely operable.
- Clear the room: Move anything that you safely can to a dry area of your home, such as a patio, garage, or any other room that has a hard flooring surface. Remember that water damaged furniture can stain. So if you have to put it in a carpeted room or if the furniture is too heavy to move, use some kind of blocker to prevent staining. Aluminum foil and wood or Styrofoam blocks can help prevent water wicking up the furniture and from staining to occur.
- Remove the water: Safely remove as much water as possible. DO NOT use a household vacuum. Only use mops, brooms, or if you have access to one, a wet/dry vacuum to remove the water.
- What’s the damage: Take a look at the flooded areas. If the job is too big and you’ve noticed that the baseboards, cabinets doors or kick plates are swollen, you will want to contact a cleanup and restoration company. Professional water extractors, air movers, dehumidifiers, and other dry out equipment will ensure that your property is properly dried out, and helps reduce the possibility for a mold outbreak. Most companies, like SERVPRO of Venice, offer 24/7 emergency services for water damage because we know that time is of the essence. The quicker it can be dried, the less damage you will have and the lower the cost to restore your kitchen.
Professional Tip: Be prepared for when disaster hits by creating an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your home and/or business. There is no cost or commitment for using this service. Our goal is to help you be better prepared for when a natural or man-made catastrophic event occurs. This ERP allows you to notate where your property’s shut offs are located, emergency contact numbers for local authorities and your vendors, and other critical information to help reduce damage when disaster strikes.
If your home or business has experienced a flooded kitchen, please give SERVPRO of Venice a call at 941-484-7777 for fast and professional cleanup and restoration services.
Mold Facts For your Venice Florida Home
11/15/2020 (Permalink)
If your home has mold damage, SERVPRO of Venice is here to help!
Did you know that microscopic mold spores are naturally occurring, both indoors and outdoors? This makes it impossible to fully "remove all mold" from a home or business as some mold remediation businesses claim. At SERVPRO of Venice, our goal is to reduce the mold spore count back to its natural or "baseline level". so while some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, remember this is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Halloween Safety Tips For Seniors
10/21/2020 (Permalink)
Look for fun things to do around the home with your family this Halloween!
When we think of 'Halloween Safety Tips' our first thoughts tend to be towards the safety of our children. Fire-resistant costumes and accessories, using reflective tape if out after dark, and always have an adult accompany young children when walking through the neighborhood or going to community events.
One area that may be overlooked for safety is that of our senior citizens. With the current (as of October 2020) COVID-19 pandemic putting our seniors at a higher risk, and with Halloween being a festive time for visiting friends, families, and even trick-or-treating neighbors, senior safety is of upmost importance.
Following are some tips to help reduce the risk during Halloween for our senior citizens in the Venice, Florida area:
- Follow local community guidelines for events and activities. As every community is different in how it is being affected by COVID-19, what is allowed in one state or town may not be in another. If traveling or a snowbird, check with the local authorities for any restrictions or advice.
- Wear a Mask! If you are wearing a decorative mask as part of a costume, please ensure it is protective or that you have a recommended protective face covering on below it.
- If you are staying home to hand out candy, ensure your home is well lit and that all walkways are clear of trip-hazards or fire-hazards (do not use flame-lit candles outside or anywhere near a curtain or other flammable objects).
- Have someone spend the evening with you, or if you know someone who has dementia or a physical limitation, stay the evening or overnight with them to help them distribute candy and stay safe.
- Use your peephole before answering the bell! Make sure you can clearly see who is at your doorstep before opening up. If you do not feel comfortable opening the door, keep it closed.
- When you are done handing out candy for the evening, put a 'Sorry no more candy!" sign on the porch to discourage more visitors.
Halloween is a fun and exciting time for most, and by following some additional safety tips, it can be for all. Remember that for seniors who are suffering from dementia or have limitations, Halloween may not be that much fun due to noises, and an increase in visitors, door knocks, and doorbell rings. If you are trick-or-treating in a neighborhood, please keep this in mind and be respectful when visiting.

October is Fire Prevention Month
10/1/2020 (Permalink)
Replace your smoke alarm batteries and ensure they work at least annually!
With cooler weather coming to even our area over the next few months, now is the time to make sure you are prepared in case of a fire in your home or place of business. Almost all fires are preventable, but when they happen, they can cause damage, stress, and loss to your family, possessions, and home.
Following are some tips that can help you ensure your family, home, and business are protected and prepared in the event there is a fire.
Cooking and heating are the leading causes of home fires and fire injuries and winter is the peak time for fire related deaths and injuries. Minimize your risk when cooking:
- Be alert; if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the oven or stovetop
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food
- When simmering, baking or roasting, check the food regularly, remain in the kitchen while cooking and use a timer
- Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop
Heating is the second leading cause of home fires. Follow these tips from the American Red Cross (PS: It does get cold enough in Florida that you will need to heat your home!)
- Keep all flammables, like paper, clothing, bedding, drapes or rugs, at least 3 feet from a space heater, stove or fireplace
- Never leave portable heaters and fireplaces unattended; turn off heaters and make sure fireplace embers are extinguished before leaving the room
- If you must use a space heater, place it on a level, nonflammable surface, like ceramic tile, not on a rug or carpet
- Keep children and pets away from space heaters
- When buying a space heater, look for models that shut off automatically if the heater falls over
Along with cooking and heating, other top causes of fire include smoking, electrical problems and candles. To minimize risks:
- Institute a “no smoking” policy in the house
- Check all cords and replace any that are frayed or have bare wires
- Switch to flameless candles
- Keep matches and lighters high and out of children’s reach in a locked cabinet
Along with these tips to prevent fires, it is essential that your home and business are prepared in case there is a fire. That means:
- Have an escape plan! Review it with the family and coworkers/staff to ensure everyone knows how to exit the building, where to meet, and how to provide first aid if necessary.
- Check your smoke alarms and change the batteries at least once a year.
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas on the ceiling or high on the wall
- Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen, at least 10 feet from the stove, to reduce false alarms
- Use special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers for people who are hard of hearing or deaf
By being prepared and knowing your plan, you and your family will be able to rest easier and have a greater chance of surviving a home fire.

Protect Your Business with these Mold Damage Tips!
2/27/2020 (Permalink)

Top 8 Residential Fire and Smoke Damage Tips
5/14/2019 (Permalink)
SERVPRO fire and smoke damage tips for Venice Florida homeowners.
If your home has suffered from fire and/or smoke damage, your safety and the safety of everyone in your household should be the primary focus. Sometimes a fire marshall or other government official may need to give the 'all clear' before allowing anyone back into the building.

Did you know that the best way to reduce a business interruption following a disaster is to prepare for it now? Around 40% of businesses may never recover after suffering a disaster. Of the businesses that do survive, the majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planning can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. - Identify your risks and notate them: are you in a flood zone? Do you have a lot of trees near your business that could pose a threat? How quickly can you evacuate if needed?
- Create a disaster plan that includes at a minimum the following information: utility shut-off locations; emergency contacts; building and business insurance, vendor, and other important personnel contacts; have all electronic and/or paper records and files backed up offsite (cloud storage); evacuation routes; backup generator location and operation; known hazardous materials; etc.
- Share your plan with key personnel and make sure your employees know how to react and be communicated with during a disaster.
- Test and practice your preparedness plans. Make sure you have all employees correct contact information and that they understand your disaster protocol.
- During times of natural disasters, listen to your local government officials and media to know if, when, and where to evacuate and for other critical news and information.

Does Your Venice Florida Home Have A Mold Problem?
9/19/2017 (Permalink)
In Venice Florida, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

Venice Florida Smoke and Soot Cleanup
10/12/2016 (Permalink)
Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Venice Home.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Venice will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
