SERVPRO Commercial Storm Damage Cleanup SERVPRO is there after the storm to help!

As the height of the 2024 Hurricane season draws near (running from June 1st to November 30th), we aim to equip our clients, residents of the Venice and Port Charlotte area communities, and business partners with essential information to stay prepared.

It's crucial to recognize that even if your home or business is fortified against the direct impact of a storm, critical infrastructure systems such as electricity, water, sewer, roads, and public transportation may suffer severe disruption. Damage to these systems can impede your ability to restock supplies or receive assistance, with delays lasting from hours to days in areas affected by major storms and hurricanes. To safeguard yourself and your loved ones, please ensure you have the fundamental items outlined in the following checklist and #BePrepared.

2022 SERVPRO First Responder Bowl Log and Teams Watch the game live on December 27th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ET on ESPN.
The 13th edition of the bowl game will be played Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 2:15 p.m. (CT) on ESPN. It will be the eighth meeting between the two schools and the first since 1977. Memphis leads the all-time series 4-3.

Memphis finished the regular season with a 6-6 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers averaged 35.1 points per game under third-year head coach Ryan Silverfield. This is the Tigers’ ninth consecutive year qualifying for a bowl game, which is tied for the ninth-best active streak in the nation and the best among all non-Power 5 programs.

First played following the 2010 season, the annual bowl game in Dallas began honoring first responders for the 2014 game. First responders include police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, correctional officers, search and rescue, dispatchers, security guards, federal agents, border patrol agents and military personnel who have specialized training and are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency. In 2018, the game was officially renamed the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl to reflect the efforts to show appreciation to first responders. Tickets for first responders are underwritten by corporate partners.

Prepare Your Business to be Disaster Ready

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Disaster Recovery Team Truck Trailer SERVPRO's Disaster Recovery Team and your local SERVPRO of Venice are ready to assist you in times of natural or manmade disasters.

Did you know that the best way to reduce a business interruption following a disaster is to prepare for it now? Around 40% of businesses may never recover after suffering a disaster. Of the businesses that do survive, the majority of them had a preparedness plan in place. Pre-planning can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind. Here are a few quick steps you can take to prepare:

  1. Identify your risks and notate them: are you in a flood zone? Do you have a lot of trees near your business that could pose a threat? How quickly can you evacuate if needed?
  2. Create a disaster plan that includes at a minimum the following information: utility shut-off locations; emergency contacts; building and business insurance, vendor, and other important personnel contacts; have all electronic and/or paper records and files backed up offsite (cloud storage); evacuation routes; backup generator location and operation; known hazardous materials; etc.
  3. Share your plan with key personnel and make sure your employees know how to react and be communicated with during a disaster.
  4. Test and practice your preparedness plans. Make sure you have all employees correct contact information and that they understand your disaster protocol.
  5. During times of natural disasters, listen to your local government officials and media to know if, when, and where to evacuate and for other critical news and information.

For more information contact us at SERVPRO, follow your local and county Emergency Management Office on social media, and use public resources available from FEMA, such as this PDF document: Preparedness Planning for Your Business

The SERVPRO First Responder Bowl will be played Saturday, Dec. 26, at SMU’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) on ABC.

"Playing on the Saturday after Christmas is a perfect fit for our game,” said Brant Ringler, executive director of the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl. “We are very much looking forward to being able to thank our first responders on a national scale in front of an ABC audience.”

In December 2014, the bowl began honoring first responders, including police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, correctional officers, search and rescue, dispatchers, security guards, federal agents, border patrol agents and military personnel who have specialized training and are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency. In 2018, the game was renamed to reflect the efforts to show appreciation to first responders.

Ford Stadium was the site of the contest last December, marking the first time that the game, previously known as the Heart of Dallas Bowl and TicketCity Bowl, was contested at a site other than Cotton Bowl Stadium.

Halloween Safety Tips For Seniors

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

Child pumpkin carving with grandparents Look for fun things to do around the home with your family this Halloween!

When we think of 'Halloween Safety Tips' our first thoughts tend to be towards the safety of our children. Fire-resistant costumes and accessories, using reflective tape if out after dark, and always have an adult accompany young children when walking through the neighborhood or going to community events.

One area that may be overlooked for safety is that of our senior citizens. With the current (as of October 2020) COVID-19 pandemic putting our seniors at a higher risk, and with Halloween being a festive time for visiting friends, families, and even trick-or-treating neighbors, senior safety is of upmost importance.

Following are some tips to help reduce the risk during Halloween for our senior citizens in the Venice, Florida area:

  1. Follow local community guidelines for events and activities. As every community is different in how it is being affected by COVID-19, what is allowed in one state or town may not be in another. If traveling or a snowbird, check with the local authorities for any restrictions or advice.
  2. Wear a Mask! If you are wearing a decorative mask as part of a costume, please ensure it is protective or that you have a recommended protective face covering on below it.
  3. If you are staying home to hand out candy, ensure your home is well lit and that all walkways are clear of trip-hazards or fire-hazards (do not use flame-lit candles outside or anywhere near a curtain or other flammable objects).
  4. Have someone spend the evening with you, or if you know someone who has dementia or a physical limitation, stay the evening or overnight with them to help them distribute candy and stay safe.
  5. Use your peephole before answering the bell! Make sure you can clearly see who is at your doorstep before opening up. If you do not feel comfortable opening the door, keep it closed.
  6. When you are done handing out candy for the evening, put a 'Sorry no more candy!" sign on the porch to discourage more visitors.

Halloween is a fun and exciting time for most, and by following some additional safety tips, it can be for all. Remember that for seniors who are suffering from dementia or have limitations, Halloween may not be that much fun due to noises, and an increase in visitors, door knocks, and doorbell rings. If you are trick-or-treating in a neighborhood, please keep this in mind and be respectful when visiting.

October is Fire Prevention Month

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

Senior citizen having his smoke alarm batteries changed Replace your smoke alarm batteries and ensure they work at least annually!

With cooler weather coming to even our area over the next few months, now is the time to make sure you are prepared in case of a fire in your home or place of business. Almost all fires are preventable, but when they happen, they can cause damage, stress, and loss to your family, possessions, and home.

Following are some tips that can help you ensure your family, home, and business are protected and prepared in the event there is a fire.

Cooking and heating are the leading causes of home fires and fire injuries and winter is the peak time for fire related deaths and injuries. Minimize your risk when cooking:

  • Be alert; if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the oven or stovetop
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food
  • When simmering, baking or roasting, check the food regularly, remain in the kitchen while cooking and use a timer
  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop

Heating is the second leading cause of home fires. Follow these tips from the American Red Cross (PS: It does get cold enough in Florida that you will need to heat your home!)

  • Keep all flammables, like paper, clothing, bedding, drapes or rugs, at least 3 feet from a space heater, stove or fireplace
  • Never leave portable heaters and fireplaces unattended; turn off heaters and make sure fireplace embers are extinguished before leaving the room
  • If you must use a space heater, place it on a level, nonflammable surface, like ceramic tile, not on a rug or carpet
  • Keep children and pets away from space heaters
  • When buying a space heater, look for models that shut off automatically if the heater falls over

Along with cooking and heating, other top causes of fire include smoking, electrical problems and candles. To minimize risks:

  • Institute a “no smoking” policy in the house
  • Check all cords and replace any that are frayed or have bare wires
  • Switch to flameless candles
  • Keep matches and lighters high and out of children’s reach in a locked cabinet

Along with these tips to prevent fires, it is essential that your home and business are prepared in case there is a fire. That means:

  • Have an escape plan! Review it with the family and coworkers/staff to ensure everyone knows how to exit the building, where to meet, and how to provide first aid if necessary.
  • Check your smoke alarms and change the batteries at least once a year.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas on the ceiling or high on the wall
  • Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen, at least 10 feet from the stove, to reduce false alarms
  • Use special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers for people who are hard of hearing or deaf

By being prepared and knowing your plan, you and your family will be able to rest easier and have a greater chance of surviving a home fire.
